Richmond VA has been chosen to host the 2015 UCI World Road Cycling Championship, cycling's premier annual competition. The event features 12 races over a nine day period, including team races with cyclists competing for their country. "Richmond is thrilled to be selected to host the 2015 World Road Cycling Championships, joining a list of great cities like Madrid, Florence and Copenhagen," said Richmond Mayor, Dwight C. Jones. The organization Richmond 2015 is hard at work planning the September 19-27, 2015 event, which is expected to have 1,500 athletes and 450,000 spectators. Maury Place at Monument, a luxury bed and breakfast overlooking Monument Avenue, will be the perfect place to stay for spectators and participants.
Richmond has a rich international cycling tradition, having hosted the Tour of America, the Tour de Trump, the Tour DuPont and the CapTech Classic. With its beautiful scenery and varied terrain, Richmond has provided exceptional race courses for other events such as the Richmond Marathon and the Monument Avenue 10k. Richmond was chosen for the 2015 UCI World Road Championships in competition with other international cities, in a process similar to Olympic site selection.
Since 2008, Maury Place at Monument has been providing luxury lodging to participants and spectators of the Richmond Marathon and Monument Avenue races, which run right past our front door. The race course for the 2015 World Championship is not yet announced (as of 2012), but we are hopeful that it will also run down our section of Monument Avenue, which features Richmond's most famous historic statues. Our bed and breakfast directly overlooks the statue of Matthew Fontaine Maury, the "Pathfinder of the Seas" who developed the science of oceanography, and we are three blocks from the statue of Arthur Ashe, Richmond's most notable athlete.
