Maury Place at Monument is the perfect lodging accommodation for runners and spectators of the Richmond Marathon, which runs right by our bed and breakfast just before mile three of the race. The 2012 race featured an all-time record of 18,702 entrants, with 6,003 participating in the marathon and 8,215 in the half marathon. The event also features an 8k race. The 2012 Richmond Marathon will run Saturday, November 16, 2013.
Considered one of the country's friendliest and most scenic marathons, the Richmond race was named a "Must Do" run in 2005 and 2009 by Runner's World Magazine. The course passes through many of the most interesting parts of the city, including the statues of Monument Avenue, Riverside Drive, and Richmond's north side, with runners crossing the James River twice. Maury Place innkeeper Mac ran the marathon in 1999 and says "the race is really well organized to make it enjoyable for participants of all levels, and there are fans cheering the runners all along the course."
Maury Place guests can view the runners from our front porch, or for guests of the Pathfinder Suite, from their private balcony overlooking Monument Avenue. The below is the marathon race course; the half marathon and 8k maps can be found here.
