Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is Virginia's largest, and its fastest growing university. With 32,000 students enrolled, VCU's campuses are an integral part of the city's neighborhoods and downtown. VCU has received national recognition for many of its schools and programs, as well as for diversity and environmental responsibility. The school's men's basketball program received national press in 2011 for reaching the NCAA Final Four.
Virginia Union University is one of our nation's oldest historically black universities, with 1,500 students studying on its 84 acre campus in the city's North Side. Virginia Union prepares students for careers in Christian Ministry, with a strong emphasis on moral values and ethics. Many notable leaders have emerged from Virginia Union throughout its history, including our current Mayor, Rev. Dwight Jones.
Union Presbyterian Seminary is also located in Richmond's North Side neighborhoods, with 220 students studying for Masters and Doctoral degrees. The newly constructed Morton G. Smith Library is one of the largest theological libraries in the country, with over 9,000 volumes. While primarily a Presbyterian seminary, the school enrolls students from over 20 denominations, including international students.
